# A publisher's AI licensing terms

This article is the plain-language version of the terms Stoa Press attaches
to its content in the FORA catalogue. The machine-readable version is the
term on each offer; where the two differ, the offer is what an agent actually
accepted.

## Permitted uses

Each essay's term lists the functions it permits. Across the catalogue the
common set is:

- `ai-input`: the text may be given to a model as input to answer a request.
- `ai-index`: the text may be indexed so that it can be found again.
- `search`: the text may be used to answer search-style queries.

Most essays also list a prohibited function, `ai-train`: the text may not be
used to train or fine-tune a model. A term that does not list `ai-train` as
permitted does not permit it.

## Pricing

Every offer states a pricing model, a rate and a currency. The catalogue is
priced in EUR only. The three models are flat (one price per licence),
per-unit (a rate on characters, tokens or accesses) and free. Where a per-unit
term carries a quota, the quota is part of the term.

The three publisher-perspective articles in this section are offered flat:
0.05 EUR for the earnings article, 0.03 EUR for the pay-per-crawl article, and
0.02 EUR for this one.

## Attribution

Stoa Press asks that an answer built on one of its essays name the publisher
and, where the format allows it, link back to the essay. On some essays this
request is written into the offer as an attribution obligation, and an agent
that accepts such an offer has agreed to it. The offer for this article
carries no obligation: the request above is the publisher's preference, and
accepting this article's offer does not commit the agent to it.

## Reporting

The publisher's record of a licence is the transaction log entry the Exchange
writes when an offer is accepted. Stoa Press does not ask agents for usage
reports. Where a term carries a contribution obligation, the offer states the
trigger and the detail; where it does not, no report is owed. None of the
offers in this section carry one.

## Restrictions

The terms in this section carry no geographic and no user-type restriction.
Elsewhere in the catalogue some essays are limited to a region or to academic
users, and that limit is stated on the offer.
